The Saturday Jazz Workshop

As the name suggests, the Saturday Jazz Workshop meets most Saturdays at the Barn Church in Kew. The group has been running since 2010 and is open to adult students, age 17 upwards. We focus on developing and honing the basic skills you need to play Jazz in a band; playing by ear, memorizing tunes, improvising over chord changes in different styles, understanding rhythm as it relates to different genres, listening to each other, reading charts and playing as part of a section. We play everything from Dixieland to Bop to Latin Jazz. The band also does regular gigs as the Kewdos (i.e. those who “doss in Kew”) Dance Orchestra.

There are only 3 criteria for entry:

  • A minimum of 2 years playing experience on your instrument
  • A rudimentary knowledge of notation and chord symbols
(Do you know what a crochet is; what does “Cmin7” mean?)
  • The desire to improve!

We are currently looking for front line players, especially tenor and bari-sax, other woodwind and brass, especially trumpet. If you play anything else and are interested, please contact me; you would be welcome to come and check out a class, and if we can’t fit you in now, we might be able to do so later.

If you are interested, please email me at, or call me on 07973 269577 for term dates, rates and any other details.
